Chasing Comets is produced and written by former football player Jason Stevens who chose to set the film in Wagga.
“Wagga is a great country town that is divided over its passion for both league and AFL,” he said.
“Obviously they have had great some films and it’s becoming known as a friendly town to film.”
The premise of the film follows the bad choices Chase Daylight makes, which negatively impact his footy career and his relationships.
At his lowest point, Daylight takes a leap of faith to sort out his life and so the story unfolds.
Mr Stevens said some might box the film into the category of ‘sport’, but that’s not the case.
“No one really wants to see actors play footy, because they can’t,” he joked.
“The feedback is, it gives people a lot of hope, everyone makes mistakes and this film emphasises that's not the end of the story.
Mr Stevens said he is grateful to the Wagga community, the council and places such as the New Oceanic Take Away who were so helpful.
“We filmed at Gumly Gumly and they bent over backwards to help us,” he said.
Jokes and references that are very “Wagga” feature in the film ranging from the debate around the origins of the Chiko Roll to the five o’clock wave at Wagga beach.
Mr Stevens said the experience of being a first-time filmmaker was made easier by the support and he was proud of the final product.
“It's hard to make an Aussie film on a limited budget without community support,” he said.
“It was extremely challenging, doing something for the first time and it was quite a daunting task.
“I was very fortunate I had my wife, she was head of wardrobe and executive producer, so it was a real family effort.”
Chasing Comets will feature at Forum 6 Cinemas from August 9 this year.
