Launching today, the premium Amazon subscription, promising two day deliveries, will cost shoppers $6.99 a month or $59 a year. To celebrate its roll out, the introductory month is being offered for $4.99.
It is considerably lower than price for annual membership in the US, which comes to $160 in Australian dollars ($US119).
For major cities across America, the premium fee also includes free same-day or one-day delivery when purchasing goods worth over $US35.
In Australia, Amazon Prime members will not be lumped with minimum purchase levies for eligible products.
It will also include access to Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Prime Reading, and gaming service Twitch Prime, plus voice-activated purchase services on Alexa.
The announcement does also arrive after Amazon blocked Australian purchases from its international sites, blaming the government’s new GST rules.
Last October, Amazon opened its first warehouse – or order ‘fulfilment centre’ in Melbourne’s Dandenong South. Another is planned for Sydney’s Moorebank.
Next-day “priority” delivery will be available for an additional $9.99 in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Canberra.
As a major city on the trade route between Melbourne and Sydney, Wagga shoppers will need to pay the higher price of $11.99 to access one-day delivery.
Two-day delivery will however be the only service available in all the major capital cities, as well as regional centres including Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Gold Coast, Gosford, Newcastle, Shepparton-Mooroopna, and Toowoomba.
More remote customers will receive their priority shipping within five days.
Jamil Ghani, vice president of Prime International at Amazon said that the current offering does not rule out tailoring services more effectively for each country.
"This is just the beginning for Prime in Australia, as we will keep making Prime better, adding even more selection and benefits," he said.
