Clayton Jacobson directs the new film Brothers’ Nest and stars in it alongside his brother Shane.
The pair arrived in Wagga on Saturday afternoon in a decked-out tour bus, a plan that unfolded after a slight ‘mishap’.
“I have snapped the Achilles heel in left foot and I have blood clots,” Shane said.
“That’s why we have been forced onto the road but having said that, out of misfortune comes joy.
“We thought we would do it old-school and hit the road together.”
Some might balk at the prospect of working closely with their sibling and then hitting the road together, but both Shane and Clayton have loved it.
“It’s always good I find to imbue as much of the project with your own sense of self because it has more meaning, more layers,” Clayton said.
The brothers spent five days ‘locked away’ going through every aspect of the film.
“We had a ball doing it together, we have been brothers for life and that’s always worked,” Shane said.
“In many situations you don’t share the common goal in a project, but me and Clay have the exact same passions and dreams.”
Shane said his preferred director is his brother as he made him a star with Kenny. Their bond has allowed them to create their own language on set, which had the crew members freaked out.
“When we talk to each other, they’re in unfinished sentences,” Clayton said.
The Australian director and actor duo are well known for their previous film together, Kenny, but their new film goes in a completely different direction.
“As an artist I like to mix things up,” Clayton said.
“We did Kenny and it had a very particular effect, we were blown away by the response we got, but I have a very eclectic taste in film-making.
“When this script came along and it was purpose-built for Shane and myself, I read it and thought ‘this is the perfect pendulum swinger’.”
The brothers were excited to be in Wagga and were looking forward to the red carpet premiere.
“The film was made with a new model that I came up with, where I went to the independent and regional film theatres and asked them to come on board from the very beginning,” Clayton said.
“We are excited to be here.”
The film synopsis:
On a cold morning in the middle of country Victoria, two brothers arrive at the family home intent with treacherous intent. Terry and Jeff’s motive is to make sure their dying mother’s plan to change her will in favor of her husband, their stepfather, is upturned.
It is all meticulously planned, but there is one thing the boys didn’t take into account - spending an entire day together.
Old grudges, different worldviews and a general troubled history will pit these two brothers against each other. Brothers’ Nest is a tragic comedy about family, loyalty and murder, demonstrating that ‘brotherly love’ has its limits.
