Snowy Mountains brumbies bill has passed through NSW Parliament.

NSW Deputy Premier and Nationals leader, John Barilaro, and Minister for the Environment, Gabrielle Upton, announced today the Kosciuszco wild horse heritage bill has passed the NSW State Parliament. 

Mr Barilaro said he opposed “cruel forms of culling” and stressed brumbies were symbolic to the Australian environment. 

“This will finally end years of speculation around the lethal culling of one of Australia’s national icons,” Mr Barilaro said. 

“The bill is about finding a balance to manage sensitive areas of the Kosciuszco National Park, whilst managing the population of brumbies, through humane population control methods.” 

Ms Upton said the bill will protect the nation’s “iconic” alpine region proving not only a win for the environment, but also the area’s heritage. 

“Humanely removing brumbies from the national park is in line with community expectations and is consistent with preserving the natural environment,” she said.
