Wagga police have located a 16-year-old, who allegedly absconded from juvie on Tuesday afternoon.
He didn’t get far.
Acting crime manager Peter Hayes said the young man failed to return from special, leave after working outside the Centre.
Police patrols were increased in a search for the local juvenile correctional facility’s detainee after 4.30pm.
Wagga residents were warned not to approach the “violent young offender”, in a public announcement that night.
Detective Inspector Hayes said the inmate was located close-to 9pm.
He said community members had contacted police with information regarding the 16-year-old’s whereabouts.
The young man was arrested attempting to hitchhike at Cartwrights Hill.
He was charged with escape custody and possession of a knife, to face Children’s Court on Wednesday.

A 16-year-old man is on the run after allegedly fleeing the confines of Wagga’s juvenile correctional facility.
The teen, who could not be named for legal reasons, is believed to have escaped the facility at about 5.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.
Riverina District Police were unable to locate the 16-year-old, despite amping up patrols across the area on May 22.
Officers are now seeking public assistance in an attempt to find the young man, but have warned residents to not approach him.
He is described as being of caucasian appearance, thin build and blonde hair.
The 16-year-old is estimated to be between 170cm and 175cm tall, and was last seen wearing a maroon jumper and dark grey tracksuit pants.
Police have reason to believe the alleged escapee may be heading towards the Lake Illawarra area.
Anyone who sees the 16-year-old has been urged to call triple-zero and those with information that may assist in locating him is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
