Heffernan has come on board as the new competition manager, replacing the long serving Mick McTaggart.
The 24-year-old is looking to grow the game.
“I’m very excited about the new role,” Heffernan said.
“The competition is already going well so far but I want to build it up so we can bring in more people to the games and become more of a community sport including more people.
“Bringing more women into the game is important as well and it is huge in this area already.”
The Canberran has been involved in rugby union as both a player and coach.
Coming in at the halfway point of the season, Heffernan doesn’t want to make too changes right away but believes he can add his spin on the competition.
“I feel the concept behind me coming in is to bring a fresh face to the role, a fresh opinion and a fresh perspective,” he said. “Obviously Mick was here for a long time and ran the competition really well but I think changes can be made and positive steps.”
