More than 60 enthusiastic students from schools across the Riverina participated. For many this was their first orienteering experience.
The day commenced with some basic instruction and a map walk with experienced coaches to explain how orienteering worked and how the various symbols on the map related to features in the bush. This was followed by an individual race and an interschool relay.
The individual races started from the Music Bowl and looped around the bushland to the east. Participants had to find specific features such as earth walls, depressions, trees and rock faces. While some students chose to use the track network others chose cut corners and to go across country.
In the individual races, Wagga High’s McDougall siblings had an outstanding day. Joannah won the G16+ age-class race, Cameron won the B14-15 age-class race and Ed won the B16+ age-class race.
Ladysmith Public School’s Zoe Willis impressed winning the G10-11 age-class race and recording a time that bettered times recorded by many of the older secondary school students who did the same course.
Mater Dei Catholic College was well represented by a competitive team. Claudia Morris, Grace Goldthorpe and Harriet Priest filled the first three places in the G14-15 age-class, Charlotte Priest won the G12-13 age-class and Brandon Ellis came second in the B16+ age-class.
Angus Roche and Liam Witing (TRAC) also did well, finishing second and third respectively in the B14-15 age-class.
The relay was enthusiastically competed. Each leg runner had to compete a separate course of about 700m that incorporated 9 control sites.
The Wagga High team of Hayley Hutchinson, Joannah McDougall and Cameron McDougall won the Seconday Schools division, while a composite team of Zoe Willis (Ladysmith PS), Matilda Cole (Ladysmith PS) and Tom Janetski (St Paul’s Lutheran Primary, Henty) won the Primary Schools Division.

This weekend at Lockhart saw a small but hardy group attending the range for a long 900 yard shoot. The wintry blast had blown in and gusts were up to 30kph. So, as a result, some targets saw some horizontal spreads due to wind.
Great to see Chris Veness again. He has finally been able to get away from the Cotton Gin and brought Garry out for a shot as well. Also Wayne Grentell came to try out his Savage. After a little bit of initial trouble he was on target and away. But must have ran out of bullets at the end after the sighting in and a few case loading issues.
All in a good afternoon and many did 3 or even 4 stages, taking advantage of the fewer numbers. Scott was coached by Graham in his third stage and David by Phil. Graham just tried to wear both his FS and FO barrels out to keep them even and put two stages through each. Laura Brindley also phoned in to let us know she had shot a 99.9 at Canberra. Just lost the one shot.
Next weekend will be 1000 Yards. Also on Sunday will be the DRA prize meeting at Cootamundra.
Results as follows: Target Rifle Scott Brindley-TRA-142.13, David Xuereb-TRA-141.8. (Out of 150)
F Class Graham Crowe-FS-155.3, Chris Veness-FS-152.6, Garry Anderson 143.3, Wayne Grentell-FS-123. (Out of 180)
Match Rifle Phil Bain – 143.8 (Out of 150).

WAGGA CITY GOLF CLUB
The Vets played a nine-hole 4BBB stroke event last Monday, with the team of Mick Tilden and Tony Thompson scoring 32 ¾ nett for a win, from John Burkinshaw and Eddie Wall 33, Russell Parr and Bob Hodge 34 ½ and Barney Matthews and Grahame Winson 34 ¾. Thursday’s stableford event saw Ken Batt overcome the trying conditions to card 20pts, and get home on a c/b from Peter Kirkman, followed by Eddie Wall 18, Roy Sanders 17, Bob Moore 16, Bill O’Rourke 15 and Bob Hodge 13 pts on a c/b.
The ladies played a stroke event on Tuesday, and in Division 1, Janelle Doust scored 72 nett, followed by Kitty Howe 74 nett. Una Pocock put in a solid round of 70 nett to claim the Division 2 voucher, with Billie Johnson runner-up, a shot back on 71 nett, while Val Brunskill scored 73 nett for success in Division 3, from Lilian Sutherland 74 nett.
To Wednesday’s members’ par event, and plenty of cash changed hands when a resurgent Peter Barnes scored +3 for a win in A Grade, followed by Bob Alexander +2, and Brian Smith +1. In the B Grade event, John Mitchell also carded +3 to win on a c/b from Tom McDonnell, with Craig Keith taking third spot with +1. NTPs to Tom McDonnell on the 9th, and Mick Laurent on both the 13th and 18th. Ball comp to -1 on a c/b.
On Saturday, Barney stamped himself as one of the best 14-markers in the land when he scored his double for the week, combining with Rex ‘Pops’ Kember to card 43pts to win the 4BBB event. A look at their individual scores, however, would support Pops’s claim that he finished the round with bruised shoulders and a dodgy back. Trevor Garside and Bob McKenzie scored 41pts for second place, on a c/b from Mick Thorne and Peter Treharne. Individual winners on the day were Peter Treharne in A Grade with 36 pts, Trevor Garside in B Grade, also with 36 pts, and Dan Emery in C Grade with 32 pts. NTPs to Phil Harrison, Grahame Winson and Andy White. Ball comp to teams with 38 pts on a c/b or better.
The Business Girls also competed for their May Monthly Medal on Saturday, and it was Doreen Hazell’s turn to collect the ‘gong’ when she scored 75 nett. Lyn Banks claimed the best nett score on the day with 73, while Lazetta Gaffney picked up the NTP on the 18th hole.
Finally, Sunday’s nine-hole stableford comp went to Steve Rodham with 21pts, from one of our keenest golf-nuts, John Burkinshaw, 20 pts.
