The regional crackdown on road safety tested more than 2600 drivers across the Riverina for drugs and alcohol between Friday April 27 and Sunday April 29.
Police conducted 2575 random breath tests with eight drivers returning positive readings, including a 48-year-old man who returned a 0.174 reading after being tested on Thorne Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A 30-year-old man tested on Red Hill Road in Tolland and a 19-year-old woman tested on Blakemore Avenue in Ashmont also returned mid-range readings and are among those facing court over the coming weeks.
Inspector McLay said the results were a positive sign but expressed disappointment with the few who continued to “flout the law”.
“Generally the results were quite pleasing in that a very small number of those tested … returned a positive reading,” Inspector McLay said.
“Unfortunately a few were still detected.
“It goes to show that some people are still happy to flout the law and those persons are the ones we’re targeting.”
More than 120 traffic infringements were handed out for various offences while 53 drug tests were also conducted with five drivers testing positive.
Inspector McLay said the operation was a warning for commuters not to abuse substances before getting behind the wheel.
“This is the first of a number of operations to be conducted during 2018,” he said.
“It’s just a reminder to persons to not drink and drive.”
Officers attached to Riverina Police District will be active this week as the region prepares for a hearty weekend of racing.
“We’ve certainly got some fairly large events coming up later in the week with the Gold Cup in Wagga so expect police to be out in force again this weekend,” Inspector McLay said.
“If you’re doing the wrong thing, chances are you’ll be arrested.”
