Last-start JRA Plate winner Tally is set to spearhead Godolphin’s first foray to Wagga.
Head trainer James Cummings has been to the carnival before and plans to run Tally in Friday week’s $160,000 feature.
“We might try and win the Wagga Cup with him,” Cummings told Sky Racing after Saturday’s win at Randwick.
“We’ll see. There’s a few options but I do like the idea.”
Godolphin is owned by Sheikh Mohammed, the vice president and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.
While Godolphin’s appearance will give the carnival an royal flavour, Tally will also bring a local touch with former Southern District jockey Tim Clark expected to get the ride.
Tally, twice a group two winner, ran third in the 2016 group one ATC Derby.
The five-year-old returned to form on Saturday with an impressive group three win over 2000m.
Stablemate Interlocuter is also being considered for a Gold Cup start.
Murrumbidgee Turf Club chief executive Scott Sanbrook believes Godolphin’s presence on Gold Cup day would be a huge result for the carnival.
“They’re obviously a powerhouse stable and for them to have the Wagga Gold Cup on their radar is a big boost for our carnival,” Sanbrook said.
“With the record prizemoney of $800,000 over the two days it’s certainly extremely appealing to all of Australia’s major stables.
“There’s been a lot of talk in both Sydney and Melbourne about the carnival and it looks like there will be a strong metropolitan presence. “
Nominations close for both Town Plate and Gold Cup day on Friday at 11am.
