The Diesels led 16-4 midway through the second half, but had to stave off another Brothers comeback at Equex Centre on Sunday.
Scores were locked after tries to Cameron Breust and Cade Price before Schubach kicked a penalty goal from in front to take a 18-16 win.
After two away wins to start the season, captain Daniel Foley is pleased with how the Diesels have started the season.
“We didn’t have much ball in the second half and had to defend our line for a long time so credit to our forwards in the middle,” Foley said.
“They did well.”
Foley scored twice in the win, but the Diesels had to slog it out late with only one fit player left on the bench.
They lost former coach Matt Hands at the start of the second half due to a groin complaint before Jackson Metcalfe (head knock) and Tui Samoa (hamstring) came off.
