A whopping 98 per cent of Daily Advertiser poll respondents voted in favour of the changes, which would see paintball markers no longer listed as prohibited firearms – the same category assault rifles fall into.
If passed by the NSW government, children as young as 12 will be able to play paintball with parental consent, bring the state’s legislation in line with most other countries around the world. The loosened restrictions would also make purchase paintball markers and pellets much easier and allow for smaller, lower-velocity pellets to be used as well.
The gun control lobby has voiced fierce opposition to the changes, saying paintball markers are guns and should be treated as such, but local businesses say it will be a common sense step in the right direction for the sport.
