The 18-year-old made it through to the T35 100m final on the Gold Coast on Wednesday night. lining up alongside two Australian teammates in the race for the gold medal.
Among them was teammate Isis Holt, who set the world record of 13.37 on the Gold Coast in February.
After a false start by Salmon, she regrouped to finish up fourth in a pack completely blitzed by the 16-year-old world record holder.
Holt screamed home for the gold in 13.58 seconds, with the silver medallist Maria Lyle from Scotland clocking 15.14 and fellow Australian Brianna Coop claiming the bronze in 15.63.
Salmon was hot on Coop’s heels in 16.39.
London last year was Salmon’s third World Championships, having also competed in 2013 and 2015, picking up a bronze in the 2013 championships in the longer T35 200m.
But the Commonwealth Games has topped those events.
“The World Championships are pretty incredible but this is another step up, especially as it’s here in Australia,” she told The Daily Advertiser prior to the games.
“And to compete at the same event with able-bodied athletes will be amazing.”
Yet another product of the City of Good Sports, Salmon moved to Canberra at the start of the year to begin a university degree.
As well as studying to be a teacher, she expects the change to help her career on the track.
“It’s already been amazing. The facilities are incredible, and I recently got a coach at the AIS (Mike Barber) who’s employed with Athletics Australia,” she said.
