A post-mortem examination is currently underway after police were called to Wagga Base Hospital about 10pm on Saturday night.
Wagga crime manager Detective Inspector Darren Cloake said the 27-year-old mother of two found her child in distress at the family home on Buna Street, Ashmont, choking on something stuck in his throat.
The baby was taken to hospital after the mother unsuccessfully attempted to remove the item.
“There was an attempt to resuscitate but unfortunately and tragically the child passed away,” Detective Inspector Cloake said.
“At present we’re providing support to the mother as part of our duties and we continue to make inquiries.”
Detective Inspector Cloake said it was a “medical-based investigation” at this stage and police were still in the process of obtaining all the details surrounding the incident.
