Last week council workers spotted the Tumut tree, located on Russell Street, with drill holes and remnants of what was likely to be poison.
Snowy Valleys Council director of assets and infrastructure, Matt Christensen, said the illegal actions had caused damage to the trunk and was unsure if the harm would result in the death of the tree.
“The plane trees along Russell Street offer practical shade and beautification to the street scape,” he said.
“It is incredibly disappointing to know that persons are deliberately sabotaging them.”
Mr Christensen is asking anybody with information to please contact Snowy Valleys Council or Tumut Police.
