The assault occurred as police were arresting a 19-year-old Wagga man in relation to the fight at Flynn Place, about 11pm on Saturday night.
The officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Wagga police Chief Inspector Andrew Spliet said the incident was “disappointing”.
“He (the officer) will make a full recovery but it’s just disappointing that people who drink too much become involved in physical altercations and want to turn on emergency services,” he said.
“Police shouldn’t have to put up with that when they’re going there to protect the community.”
The man will face Wagga Local Court on April 11, charged with assault and assaulting a police officer.
Chief Inspector Spliet said the relationship between the man and woman was not known.
A 42-year-old woman involved in the assault was also arrested and charged with offensive conduct, to attend Wagga Local Court on the same date.
Chief Inspector Spliet said police would continue to take a strong stance on any assault.
“I guess the message out there is if you’re dealt with by the police for matters you’re going to be put before the court eventually,” he said.
“If you’re arrested – comply, do what you’re asked to do and the matters won’t escalate.”
