Dan Hoban plans to deliver on Tuesday and Friday mornings to break the monopoly of the larger supermarkets and support the local industry.
For Wagga’s Leonie White, whose father was a milk delivery man from the late 1930s until the 1960s, it’s a chance to take a walk down memory lane.
“When you think about it we all have busy days and a lot of us buy the groceries online so why not the milk deliveries like the good old days?” she said.
“It was a different world and if he’s trying to start this up he needs all the support he can get.
“I suppose that’s the Aussie way to support the fellow that’s having a crack, I hope it goes well for him.”
Ms White said some of Wagga’s older homes may still have their kitchen hutches where the milko poured milk into their own containers.
Tom’s Takeaway store owner Sylvia Choong said she didn’t think it would impact on their business and was supportive of the venture.
“It’s not a big part of what we sell, we’re mainly about the food so it doesn’t concern us,” she said.
“I think it would be very convenient.”
Albury resident Mick Law said the concept needed to be supported to help out the elderly who struggled to leave their homes for everyday items.
“We want to support it because we don’t need it but other people really do,” he said.
“The milkman isn’t going to come up the street for one person, it has to be profitable for him like everything does.”
Mr Law, who used to have his milk delivered when his partner was pregnant, said it was also a positive because there was an element of nostalgia.
“When I was a kid we used to get the vegetables delivered to us by horse and cart, clearly we loved it,” he said.
“I don’t know whether we’d ever see that come back as well but we would support it.
“If the healthy people don’t support this then it won’t be around for the younger and older ones who can’t get out.”
