Christmas is a time for celebration and family but spare a thought for homeless refuges around Wagga, some of whom are bracing for their busiest time of the year.

St Vincent De Paul Society shelter Edel Quinn is already at full capacity and accommodation manager Nathalie Prentice says referrals are still being lodged.
“We do have a lot of people accessing our services close to Christmas,” Ms Prentice said.
“It’s really hard for us because we’re already at full capacity and we can’t really let anyone else in.”
One resident, who wished to remain unnamed, said she had entered the shelter in November and would be spending Christmas with Edel Quinn.
“I’ve been waiting for my partner to get out of jail and he’s still got two months to go,” she said.
“My family isn’t good to me but they’re pretty good here.”
Edel Quinn case worker Graeme Newcombe said Christmas was typically a time when residents, both individuals and families, could begin to struggle financially.
“This month’s been really busy and it’s not just men or women coming through but entire families seeking assistance,” he said.
“Whether they’ve overspent or overcommitted during the holidays, a lot of families start feeling the pinch when they realise that electricity bill or credit card debt hasn’t gone away.”
For Ms Prentice, it’s important just to keep the Christmas cheer.
“We’ll still have a staff member on site for December 25 and we do up a big Christmas lunch and dinner with lots of gifts for our residents,” she said.
“We like giving residents a nice personal touch with a home-cooked meal - our cook is amazing and it’s hard to lose weight around here.”
It’s a sentiment shared by all staff members.
“We need to celebrate, otherwise it’s just another day,” Mr Newcombe added.
“It’s our little house family Christmas.”
Ms Prentice paid tribute to the generosity of those who have contributed or donated towards the Edel Quinn centre during a difficult period.
“The kids from the juvenile detention centre have been cooking for us and so many have lent a hand. It’s been incredible.”
