Technical officer at the the Wagga Bureau of Meteorology office, Nigel Smedley, said Tuesday’s top temperature is expected to break a December record that’s been running for nearly 64 years.
“That was 43.2 degrees, which was set on December 21 back in 1953,” Mr Smedley said.
Wagga’s expected top temperature is predicted to be 43 degrees with northeasterly winds predicted to reach up to 40 km/h in the middle of the day.
“So we’re almost spot on that record and we may even exceed it on Tuesday, we’ll see how we go,” Mr Smedley said.
The weather bureau is also predicting a 40 per cent chance of showers in the early afternoon and a possible thunderstorm Tuesday evening.
Winds are likely to pick up in speed, which has got emergency services on high alert.
“The actual forecast is becoming cloudy with north-east winds, which will be up to 30km/h around midday, before it turns north-west to south-west and up to 40km/h in the afternoon,” Mr Smedley said.
“So some strong winds in the afternoon and some very hot temperatures, so we may get a record.”
The hot conditions are expected to be make way for more average December conditions, with a 14 degree deficit in Wednesday’s much kinder maximum of 29 degrees.
Up to six millimetres of rain is also expected on Wednesday before temperatures climb back towards 40 degrees on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Day is expected to be partly cloudy and 33 degrees, however, that could change closer to the day.
