MTC chief executive Scott Sanbrook said although the event didn’t go as planned with the races called off, the phantom meet was was still a great success.
“Unfortunately the forecast was very bleak and that was the way it turned out,” Mr Sanbrook said.
“People just kept arriving through those turn-stalls which is surprising on such a tough day.
“Those who did turn up have had a good time.”
Wagga father Chris Ruskin said his family still had a great time despite the rain and dwindling numbers.
Mr Sanbrook said the MTC recorded around 35mm of rain before 7am, when they decided to call the meet off.
Another 45 mm of rain reportedly fell before 10.30am – but it didn’t stop around 400 people celebrating the festive season.
The expected Faces of the Carnival announcement was postponed.
