In 1998, the Australian dollar was low, flooding struck the Northern Territory, and the Illawarra, Ricky Martin’s The Cup of Life/Maria was the number one single on the ARIA charts and Ginger left the Spice Girls.
But in the Wagga sporting scene, however, things were going great guns.
Temora Dragons defeated Young Cherrypickers 38-22 in the Group Nine first grade grand final, while Turvey Park, Wagga Magpies and Tumut took out the lower grade titles.
Ardlethan’s Matthew Currie picked up the Gerald Clear medal in the Farrer League and Glenn Bench took out the comp’s goalkicking title, but the side went down to The Rock-Yerong Creek in the granny.
There was just four points in it when Wagga Tigers downed Turvey Park in the Riverina League grand final 13.9 (87) to 8.7 (55).
