Ganmain footballer Clare Lawton, Hay product Jodie Hicks and Coolamon’s Ellie Dalgarno-Fixter are all a chance of being selected in the AFLW Draft.
Lawton played with Greater Western Sydney (GWS) in the inaugural AFLW competition earlier this year but has nominated for Brisbane in this year’s state-based Draft due to an upcoming move to Queensland for employment.
Hicks, who has been playing in Canberra in recent times, is considered a ‘huge chance’ of being picked up, while Dalgarno-Fixter also impressed when playing for NSW-ACT’s under 18 Youth Girls team this year.
Former GWS women’s coach Tim Schmidt coached the NSW-ACT Youth Girls team at this year’s national championship and believes Dalgarno-Fixter is a bright prospect.
“Ellie is a utility player. We played her back, forward and in the ruck,” Schmidt said.
“She’s a tall player but she’s actually really good with her hands below her knees. She’s a very clean player with a good goal sense.
“She can take a grab and then finish off her work by kicking goals.”
Dalgarno-Fixter, 18, was invited to the AFLW Draft Combine earlier this month but was unavailable to attend due to representative cricket commitments.
Each of the eight AFLW clubs have a primary list of 27, with another three rookie spots available, one of which is for young development players.
The AFLW Draft starts at midday on Wednesday, where there are 49 selections, and the Rookie Draft will be held on Friday.
