Tristan James Lee, 29, is alleged to have stabbed 37-year-old Mr Murdoch in Tolland on May 16, resulting in his death.
Andrew Hanshaw, who represented the Crown, told the court there was an issue with the material, which needed to be re-served.
Magistrate Michael Crompton granted an extension for the brief to be served until October 25 and adjourned the case to November 8 for a reply to the brief.
Lee made no application for bail when he appeared in court via video link.
Meanwhile, the case against an Ashmont man accused of plunging a knife into the body of another man has been adjourned for negotiations.
Daniel Bruce Boyton, 24, is facing two charges – causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder and wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The case will return to court on November 8.
