A 24-year-old man was drinking at the New Crown Hotel in Hay on Saturday night when he ended up in an altercation with another man.
After the fight broke out around 1am on Sunday morning, the man fled the premises with a large number of fellow pub patrons giving chase, police say.
According to police, he managed to shake the chasers but when he arrived at his Belmore Street home more than half an hour later, his house had been broken into and three men were laying in wait.
“The same 24-year-old has arrived home… and found the house unlocked, open and lights on,” police said in a release.
“Upon entering, he has seen one of the males from the Crown Hotel inside his residence.”
Two more men emerged and attacked the 24-year-old, using weapons and fists to beat him to the ground.
Once down, the attack continued, police said, leaving the man with significant injuries.
“(The victim) was conveyed to Hay Hospital for treatment with a view of being conveyed to Griffith Hospital for scans on his head,” police said.
Detectives from Deniliquin Local Area Command established a crime scene at the home and it was examined further by forensic officers.
