Victorian-based media speculate Australia’s most wanted fugitive may be living in ‘regional NSW’.
Potter, who bludgeoned a woman to death before cutting off her head and fingers, is one of Australia’s most-wanted fugitives.
The former Wollongong coalminer spent 15 years in prison for the 1981 murder of Kim Barry.
After meeting the 19-year-old at a Wollongong nightclub, Potter lured the shop assistant to his Corrimal flat before killing her and dumping her torso and dismembered head and fingers below Jamberoo Mountain lookout.
He was convicted and served 15 years before being released from jail in 1996.
Detectives received information from Crime Stoppers that Potter may be residing in the Griffith area earlier this year.
The Crime Stoppers call was received in March and detectives are keen for this person to call back.
Police had previously received information that Potter was seen at a local shop and gym in Griffith in July 2016. These sightings have been investigated by detectives and eliminated from their inquiries.
Potter is known to have connections to the Riverina area in NSW and there have previously been a number of other reported unconfirmed sightings in the Griffith and Yenda areas.
Potter, 59, has been on the run since he failed to appear on bail for conspiracy to murder charges at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on 1 February, 2010.
Despite a number of sightings in Queensland and several nation-wide public appeals, Potter has managed to evade police capture.
A $100,000 reward was announced in February 2011 for information leading to his capture.
Potter is currently facing criminal charges of conspiracy to murder and is also wanted in relation to serious Commonwealth drug charges.
Since Potter failed to appear at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court in 2010, Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have been working closely together and with other state law enforcement agencies to try and determine his location.
Potter was last sighted by local police in Tully, Queensland, south of Cairns and north of Townsville, on 28 August, 2010 when he ran from a vehicle during a routine police intercept.
An extensive search was carried out and his camping equipment was seized by the Queensland Police Service.
In 2013 police searched the Riverina area on the border of Victoria and New South Wales after receiving information Potter may have been staying in the area.
Several unconfirmed sightings of Potter were reported in the vicinity of Tocumwal and Cobram.
A number of images of Potter have been released and he has been seen with a ginger beard and dyed brown hair to avoid detection.
He is described as Caucasian, 175cm tall, medium to solid build, fair complexion, brown eyes, brown greying hair and a ginger beard.
He is known to wear a gold sleeper earring in both ears, wears glasses and regularly wears a gold chain around his neck.
Potter has a propensity for changing his appearance and has used a number of aliases including Josh Lawson, John Page, Jim Henderson and Peter Adams.
Anyone who sights Graham Gene Potter is advised not to approach him but contact Triple Zero (000). Anyone with any information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
