Interim general manager Robert Knight announced Mr Butler would fill the commercial development director’s role for six months from Monday, July 31.
Mr Butler had previously been the infrastructure and environment director at the recently-merged Federation Council, but quit in May after 12 months on the job.
As part of the local government proclamations at the time of the merger, Mr Butler was to fill the role of deputy general manager, but instead he was made one of four directors.
Mr Knight said Mr Butler had “broad experience in planning, environmental health and council administration”.
In a prepared statement released to the media on June 28, Mr Knight advised Mr Somerville had left his role and “...will pursue other career interests closer to his family in Victoria”.
