Christmas Day. During the morning I was busy getting all square for the spread, about 10 of the Sgts. helping, extra plates, etc. had to be obtained, besides sufficient tables, chairs, etc., etc. At 1 o’clock we started serving out and at 2 o’clock ‘twas finished, it being the quickest served dinner I have seen in my experience.
I made use of 3 windows for passing the stuff in and had the Sgts. on definite jobs and all went very smoothly. Tea, the men served themselves. I picked out two trusty Corporals who picked out their own mess orderlies so that tea was also a success. Then they had a bridge tournament and concert, followed by supper, and it was voted the best Christmas day they have had in the Army, so I was well pleased.
The Sgts. had their dinner at 6. It was not as good a meal as the men had but there was a fair quantity of liquor so all was merry with several stretcher cases to deal with about 10 o’clock. Altogether a very successful day. Managed to get to bed about 11 o’clock after having a bit of a dance to wind up with. Snowed last night for the first time so it was seasonable.
