Christmas Eve. A beautiful sunny day ending with a fall of snow at night. Spent a very busy day, every minute being given to the dinner arrangements. At 10 I set off by car with a Belgian and went to a village, Erpion, about 12 K., and bought 300 K. of potatoes paying 50 Francs per 100. I went in a Ford and drove myself, a most perilous trip as the steering gear was loose, making it difficult to keep the road, and it had no brakes, the reverse gear being used instead.
The driver himself asked me to drive, it being so bad. During the afternoon I collected 5 of the fowls we spoke for yesterday, also more cabbages, some of which I paid for, others the people would not accept anything for them, the fowls I paid 10 Fr. each. Sent a wagon to Cimay, 20 kilos, for 400 litres of beer so should not be dry.
From the canteen we obtained 3 turkeys and our Christmas boxes from Australia we collected by car from Sol. le Chateau, so that we are practically now set up. Other matters such as the drawing up of the menu, etc. also had to be done. Funds to the extent of 600 Francs we drew from our funds at the Pay Office.
