Wanderers coach Ben Schmid labelled Saturday’s performance as ‘very disappointing’ as they went down 2-1 to bottom-placed Gazy Auburn at Gissing Oval.
Goals to the previously winless Gazy Auburn in the 30th and 55th minute gave the visitors a 2-0 lead, before a brilliant Vasilis Spiliotopoulos free kick from right on the 18 yard box gave the Wanderers hope with 16 minutes remaining.
The Wanderers pressed hard but were unable to find the equaliser.
“It was very disappointing,” Wanderers coach Ben Schmid said.
“We were far from our best. We started very flat, mentally we weren’t there and we were just off the pace.
“I know we’re a very young side but we just didn’t get up for the occasion. It took for them to get to 2-0 up for us to get some fire in our step, which was really disappointing.”
The Wanderers, who sit in ninth position, will need to regroup quickly and get back on track before they host Western Condors at Gissing Oval on Saturday.
Western Condors are the only team the Wanderers have beaten this year. Wagga City travelled to Sydney and beat them 5-1 in the opening game of the state league season.
“It’s a huge game for us,” Schmid said.
In a big boost to the Wanderers’ chances, star US import Chinedu Arinze and Adrien Jolly will both return for the clash against Condors.
