Berry will climb aboard Cool Chap for the first time on Friday as the horse looks to go one better than his second placings in the Canberra and Albury Cups.
Berry got his eye in early at the Wagga carnival with a winning double on Town Plate day and will combine with the in-form Lee and Anthony Freedman stable.
The Freedman yard had two runners on Town Plate day, for two winners, so the combination of the two will take some stopping in the Cup.
Berry has looked at the race and hopes Cool Chap can make the most of a strong tempo.
“There looks to be a nice bit of speed in the race,” Berry said.
“I’ll probably settle midfield, a touch worse, wherever we’re comfortable.
“Most of the chances look to be on-speed so hopefully they carve each other up a little bit to help our chances.”
Cool Chap has gone down narrowly at Canberra and Albury and Berry will look to change the timing of horse’s finish in a bid to avoid another bridesmaid finish.
“He’s run very well in the Albury Cup and the Canberra Cup,” Berry said.
“Through no fault of Brenton’s, the horse probably just got there a bit too early, you sort of got to get there a bit late.
“But we’ve drawn the perfect gate where we can smother him up and have the last crack.”
Cool Chap is $6.50 second favourite.
