The owner of Scribbles Cafe took advantage of a quiet period to sit in one of the booths at her work to type down what would become her first song, named The Strength of Sisters.
She saw a song competition on social media and thought she’d send her lyrics in – she was blown away when she realised her song had made the final 20 in the nation.
“I was so beside myself,” Denise said.
“I’ve never had any training. I’ve never dabbled in songwriting before.”
The lyrics tell the personal tale of the bond of her sisters growing up in Wagga – one of whom died in 2006.
The Song Comp is for unsigned and amateur songwriters and is judged by a panel of industry experts.
Denise said she wrote the lyrics with a tune in her head, but has never played an instrument before, saying she’d love to hear it being played one day.
“I’d love to hear someone sing it,” she said.
The experience has lit a spark in Denise – she said she has written a number of songs since The Strength of Sisters.
She listed country songbirds Kasey Chambers, Melinda Schneider and Tammy Wynette as influences.
