The star hooker has been named at five-eighth for Gundagai’s season opener against Young at Anzac Park on Sunday.
It looks to be a long term fix for the man judged Group Nine’s best in 2015.
Captain-coach James Smart has elected for Brock Dunn to start the hooker
“I made a decision not too long after West Wyalong as I thought he and Brock were too good to be playing half a game each,” Smart said.
“I want them both in the 13 so I had a bit of a re-think about what I was going to do with the halves this season.
“Playing in the halves in something Luffy has done before and has done well there in the past.
“His most natural position is hooker but Brock’s most natural position is hooker as well.
“I think something had to give there.”
Smart believes it will be an adjustment for himself as well, with the two halves bringing different styles.
“Luffy is the type of player where you don’t put a lot of structure around him because he is an instinctive player,” Smart said.
“He just plays what he sees and a lot of the time things he does on the field I don’t really know what he is going to do.
“I don’t mind having guys in the team like that as if I don’t know what he is going to do the chances are the opposition won’t know what he is going to do either.”
Gundagai starts their campaign against Young but there are still doubts over whether rampaging front rower Vinny Brown will take his place.
Vince Brown was injured in the trial win over Woden Valley and Smart is still unsure where he stands after Brown also welcomed his second child into the world this week.
“I assume that he won’t be playing,” he said.
Matt Henery is set to come off the back if Brown can’t take his place.
