Only Kangaroos failed to make it through, falling to Canberra club Woden Valley 10-6.

Brothers started off the evening with a 16-6 win over Group 20 premiers Tullibigeal Lakes United before Southcity eased past Group 11 champions Forbes with a 18-0 win.

Group Nine premiers Gundagai had a tougher task of it against Group 20 club Leeton.

The Greens led in the second half before Damian Willis scored to level things at 12-all and help the Tigers go through on the first try rule.

Young then took to the field against the hosts and their new New Zealand imports shone.

Halfback Raymond Talimalie pulled off a 40-20 with a minute left in the first half before Sio Setefano barged his way over the line.

The Cherrypickers put on another try in the second half, when Tom Bush scored in the corner, for a 12-0 win.

Kangaroos failed to make it five from five for the Group Nine clubs when Woden got the early jump on them.

The Rams scored in the third minute and went out to a 10-0 lead early in the second half.

Hayden Jolliffe scored with two minutes left to give the ‘Roos one last short but they were forced to settle for a 10-6 loss.

It was Ben Jeffery’s first game at the helm of the club, and he was far from disappointing with the young team’s performance against one of the competition favourites.

“It wasn’t too bad,” Jeffery said.

“It is the first hit out together as it is virtually a whole new team there.

“There are some young kids in there who played against a team who were a lot bigger than us and I thought that would really tell but to our credit the boys stuck in there and it was only 10-6.

“I thought we didn’t play our best footy with the ball but that will come with the combinations.”

Playing at halfback, Jeffery quickly found a new combination with Jolliffe.

The second rower was a standout.

“I thought he was great,” Jeffery said.

“He was very unlucky to get one (try) disallowed and scored one.

“He was quite strong.”

Despite conceding an early try, Temora proved too strong for perennial heavyweights Orange CYMS.

CYMS looked dangerous on the edges early and found a way through after three minutes before the big Dragons pack started to get on top.

The Dragons scored two tries in the last five minutes of the half, the first from new recruit Nathan McGowan, before Adam Reardon pounced on a ricocheted grubber kick from Gavin Kite to take the lead.

Kiwi import Atalea Nefetalai then set up the decisive try, stripping the ball out metres from the Dragons try line allowing Grant Kitchenhand to complete the 18-6 win.

Albury sealed a big night for the Group Nine clubs, moving past Bathurst Panthers on the first try rule.

The two teams finished locked on 10-all but Lachie Hampton’s opener after seven minutes was enough for the Thunder to progress.

New captain-coach Tuki Jackson had leveled things with five to play to set up a quarter-final date with Group 20 club Yenda, who had the first round bye.

In the first of the quarter-finals an injury-plagued Gundagai will take on Woden Valley.

That will be followed by the clash between Albury and Yenda before Young takes on Southcity.

Temora and Brothers complete the quarter-finals.

Saturday’s men’s action starts at 5pm with the leaguetag knockout beginning at 11am.
