Despite Wagga City closing in on a first innings win on Saturday, Colts captain-coach David Bolton is firmly concentrating on a quick finish to the first dig for the Cats and no further.
Wagga City needs another 44 runs to pass the first innings target of 126 with another seven wickets in hand.
Bolton is looking to put the Colts under pressure early and hasn’t given up hope of claiming first innings points.
“Outside of Sam Whitfield’s innings it was a little bit disappointing last week but the focus is on getting the seven wickets we need as quickly as possible, preferably before they get the 40-odd runs they need,” Bolton said.
“The focus is to bowl well early and hopefully take those seven wickets.”
The clash at McPherson Oval resumes with Wagga City at 3-82.
Jon Nicoll (21) and Warren Clunes (0) are at the crease.
With the match well advanced and new scoring system in place this season, both teams should have a chance to earn second innings points.
Both will need wickets to claim any second innings points on offer but employing an aggressive approach in the bid to chase valueable points in the second innings isn’t something Bolton has considered.
“I haven’t really thought about it at all," he said.
“We are just concentrating on the first innings points at this stage and they are still up for grabs.
“We are just trying to get seven wickets as quick as possible and can assess the rest of the day from there.”
The Colts don't have any changes to the team this week after they welcomed Adam Skow back last week.
Skow’s bowling will be a big boost for the ladder leaders, but it was his batting skills that came to the fore.
Coming in at number 10, Skow was one of two Colts batsmen to reach double figures.
Whitfield lead the way with 73, but Skow offered strong resistance down the order before his team was bowled out in the 42nd over.
“Skowy has moved back which has been good,” Bolton said.
Wagga City will make two changes with Harry Rosengren and Max Harper both coming back from Riverina’s Kookaburra Cup campaign.
They will come in for Cane Graetz and Scott Nicoll.
