The 79-year-old had lost his own father suddenly when he was killed by a heart attack at only 65 years of age.
When Mr Mullins started experiencing “dull aches” across his chest, he went to a heart specialist.
After an angiogram, Mr Mullins was rushed into surgery and had a life-saving stent inserted into an artery.
But the retiree wasn’t down for long, and was out knocking for the Heart Foundation’s Big Heart Appeal only two days later.
“I think it might of been a bit of a test to see how I felt,” Mr Mullins said.
“It all went well, and I didn’t collapse at anyone’s doorstep.”
The Big Heart Appeal is accepting donations for heart research until September 30.
