Wallett kicked all five of Mater Dei’s goals as they held on for a five-point win over South Wagga Public School, 5.3 (33) to 4.4 (28) at Robertson Oval.
There was nothing between the two schools all night, but three consecutive goals to Wallett during the third term took Mater Dei from 11 points down to seven points in front.
South Wagga peppered the goals for the majority of the final term but Mater Dei hung on for their third Paul Kelly Cup victory.
Mater Dei coach Darren Wallett loved the way his team went about it.
“Our pressure and tackling was outstanding,” Wallett said.
“That held us in good stead in an even contest. There was nothing between the two teams, it could have gone either way.”
Wallett was also proud of the way his team fought hard when South Wagga piled on the pressure late in the game.
“Our defence in the last quarter was brilliant,” he said.
“Our defence won us the game.”
Apart from young Wallett, big ruckman Jamie Mooney was very important around the ground and took a lot of marks.
Tom Bourne was a stand out for South Wagga.
