Once the poorer cousin of their AFL Riverina counterparts, Black Diamond embarrased Farrer League on their home turf, running out comfortable winners 15.21 (111) to 11.9 (75).
The scoreline finished in a respectable manner for Farrer League but it could have been far worse if Black Diamond had of kicked straighter in front of goal.
A six-goal second quarter from Black Diamond did the damage as they strolled into half-time with a 33-point lead.
Farrer produced a greater effort in the second half but the margin grew to as much as 50 points but the home team never gave in.
Black Diamond dominated the midfield battle and moved the football extremely well as they posted their fourth consecutive interleague victory.
Black Diamond coach Chris Bishop applauded the efforts of his young representative team.
“We came down with probably 18 of probably our pre-selected team unavailable so with a bunch of kids, we had guys who really committed to the contest and that’s the most pleasing thing,” Bishop said.
“To get them to come down here mid-year, it’s outstanding to get a win for the league.
“We only do a week’s worth of training but I think the boys really pride themselves on getting a win and representing themselves and their club and league.
“Hopefully other leagues, Sydney and that, start to see that Black Diamond has improved out of sight and that we can get, I wouldn’t say bigger or better rep games, but more opportunities to play other teams in the future.”
The hunger of Black Diamond certainly showed as they played with much more spirit than Farrer, particularly in the first half.
Bishop could not fault his team’s effort or performance.
“We knew the first quarter would be red hot, which it was, and then the game would settle and that’s where we probably opened them up,” he said.
“The defensive side doesn’t get shown but I thought our defensive side was just 10 out of 10, and won us the game.”
Pat McMahon was a big target up forward for Black Diamond and he had three goals by the six minute mark of the second term.
Chris Jackson rucked well in his return to the Riverina, while Andrew Scott, Matt Spinks and Matt Bailey were others to stand out.
Scott won the best-on-ground medal for the visitors.
