The Marrar coach’s plan to catch Coleambally on the hop in round one worked a treat as the Bombers made the Blues pay for missed opportunities and then held on to win 10.7 (67) to 9.11 (65).
The Bombers took a 16-point lead to quarter time after Coleambally went goal-less in the opening term.
“We started really, really ordinary so that was the problem,” Blues coach Josh Hamilton said.
“It’s just a mindset thing – once we got up and going we were right.”
Down by 23 points at three-quarter time, the Blues stormed home but fell two points short.
Josh Hagar and Nick Molkentin were Marrar’s best while Brad Turner kicked three goals.
