After winning prize against Leeton last week, West Wyalong fended off Cootamundra’s challenge at McAlister Oval on Sunday.
Last week we thought we would be lucky to beat Leeton so to win it again this week is really good.
- West Wyalong O'Farrell Cup captain Al Edis
Chasing a big total, Cootamundra fell 66 runs short to see West Wyalong retain the O’Farrell Cup for the first time since 1983.
West Wyalong made the most of the good batting wicket, after winning the toss, to post 271 off its 55 overs.
They soon had Cootamundra under pressure with the ball as 17-year-old Jacob Bell took two early wickets.
West Wyalong captain Al Edis thought the imposing total helped his team get the advantage.
“We definitely put the pressure on with that total,” Edis said.
“The ground ended up playing really well and the outfield is really quick.”
After five consecutive teams failed to defend the prize, Edis was pleased to finally end the sequence.
“It was a bit different to last week,” Edis said.
“We are over the moon.
“Last week we thought we would be lucky to beat Leeton so to win it again this week is really good.”
Angus Green led the way with the bat, top scoring with 63.
He combined with Byrce Goop (26) for an opening partnership of 55 before he being joined by Jesse Hampton for a 63-run third-wicket partnership.
Hampton scored 54 off 67 deliveries as he helped accelerate West Wyalong’s innings.
Rob Edis then put on a faster than a ball 37 to help his team to reach 270.
After Bell had Cootamundra in early trouble, Matt Berkrey (58) and wicketkeeper Brendan Gale (35) put on a 88-run partnership to move their team to 2-106.
However consistently losing wickets hurt Cootamundra, who were bowled out in the 47th over.
West Wyalong will now host Holbrook in the second last challenge of the year.
Edis used to play in the association and is looking forward to another challenge.
“I haven’t really looked too far ahead but that will be really good,” he said.
