The annual Gumi race is back on Sunday, and it’s full steam ahead for organisers after a hurdle last month.
Roads and Maritime Service (RMS) granted Gumi a water licence after some safety concerns were floated.
South Wagga Apex Gumi committee member Neal Molineaux said there had been a steady stream of interest, but expected most participants would sign up on the day.
“The day’s looking good and we’re happy with the river height,” Mr Molineaux said.
“Everyone will be out to have some fun, so we’re looking forward to it.”
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), along with local State Emergency Service (SES) members will assess the conditions of the river the morning of the event, but it will be unlikely the race will be cancelled.
River height must be between 1.5m and 2.8m for the race to go ahead.
“The intent was never to cancel the event, but to work with organisers to ensure the event could be enjoyed as safely as possible,” an RMS spokesman said.
“All competitors will now be required to wear a lifejacket suitable for the river environment, which is in high visibility colour and allows for swimming with the jacket on.
“Rafts will also require means of steering, which includes paddles, to avoid snags and hazards.”
Entrants must be a minimum age of seven and be accompanied by two adults if any crew members are under the age of 14.
NSW State Emergency Service Murrumbidgee region controller David Buchtmann said they would have boats on the water throughout the day.
“It’s all about ensuring people’s safety on the day,” Mr Buchtmann said.
