Looking to make some extra cash for Christmas or buy that hard-to-find present for someone who has everything?
Then the Wagga car boot sale to be held on Sunday, November 22, at the Wagga racecourse might be just the ticket.
The sale has been organised to raise awareness and funds for the specialist palliative care unit at Calvary Hospital and the Wagga and Region Suicide Prevention Network.
The event is being organised by Penny Lamont and Graham McKenzie.
“We wanted to do something that would appeal to everyone in the community, something everyone could be involved in,” Mrs Lamont said.
Already, 30 sites have been sold to market-type vendors, and Mrs Lamont hopes up to 60 sites will eventually sell their products at the event.
She said people could book sites for $30 each where they could sell items they want to get out of their cupboards or elsewhere around the house.
There will be food and drink stalls.
Kay Hull is chairwoman of a foundation formed to raise funds and awareness of the palliative care unit at Calvary.
She said money raised through the car boot sale and other means would go towards staff training and equipment at the centre.
“The car boot sale is a great way to get rid of all that stuff you don’t want, but you may not want to have a garage sale,” Mrs Hull said.
“You can pop it in your boot or in a trailer and bring it down.”
Committee member of the suicide prevention network, Dan Hayes, said money raised from the car boot sale would go towards raising awareness and also training members of the community in suicide intervention skills.
“The end goal is to make our community suicide safe,” Mr Hayes said.
“We believe anyone can help prevent suicide; people just need the knowledge and skills to do it.”
