Speaking at Wagga’s RSL Club to a group from the Australians for Constitutional Monarchy, former official secretary to the Governor General, Malcolm Hazell, said moving to a republic could create havoc for Australia.
“The problem with changing from a monarchy to a republic is that we don’t know what kind of republic it’s going to be,” he said.
“The point of having a constitution is that it prevents other, potentially more radical people, from having the power.”
Mr Hazell disagrees with people who contest the idea of a monarchy because they feel it gives Australia less independence.
“We have a constitution which is uniquely and completely Australian,” he said. “So the argument that we need to break free from the shackles of Britain is total rubbish.”
