A “slam off” had to decide the winner of the Raw Roar competition night last week after a three-way tie for first place. A slam off is conducted the same way the slam is with the top three performing a second poem.
Co-founder of Raw Roar Zoe Beaumont took out first place followed closely by Bil White and Tara Lightfoot. Just one point separated the top three.
The competition night saw 14 competitors take to the stage and five judges score them out of 10.
The judges were decided by whoever reached for the lolly first on the table they were sitting at. From the five judges the highest and lowest score was discarded and the middle three used. The “lovers and ex’s” method.
More than 70 people packed the chandelier room at Romano's to watch the competition on Wednesday September 30.
Miss Beaumont also recently won the state heats of in the Australian Poetry Slam. She will travel to Sydney in two weeks to compete in the state finals.
If successful she will go onto compete against all state winners two days later. The Raw Roar is a slam poetry night which was started earlier this year by Tara Lightfoot and Zoe Beaumont.
The nights will continue in October and November with a break for December.
The October event will be a theme night along with the January event which falls on Australia Day.
