The Murrumbidgee Turf Club (MTC) will host a prominent Saturday race meeting next February which could provide the stepping stone to landing a prestigious standalone event.
Wagga’s heat for the 2016 Country Championships has been slotted in for Saturday, February 27 and will feature full Sky 1 and TAB coverage – a rarity for the city on a Saturday.
“If a day like this is successful, you don’t know where it could lead,” MTC chief executive Scott Sanbrook said.
“We need to get big crowds and a strong betting turnover to back up any thoughts of being able to hold a standalone Saturday cup meeting. It’s terrific to get this opportunity and we’ll go all out to capitalise on it.”
The Advertiser has called on Racing NSW to hold a standalone Saturday race meeting in Wagga as part of the Our Sporting Chance campaign.
This year’s inaugural Country Championships heat at the MTC was held on a Sunday.
