Maureen Turk is challenging Wagga residents to desex their pets and stop the need for people like her to foster unwanted animals.

In the meantime, the cute, cuddly critters in her rescue group’s care are looking for their forever home.

Best Friends Animal Rescue has 42 cats in its care, and is taking measures to rehome them to ensure it will be able to take in the expected influx of kittens over breeding season.  

The government has made its intention to make feral cats public enemy number one, which makes desexing a vital tool to save a life.

Cats can be desexed from 10 weeks, as long as they weigh more than one kilogram.

The group is discounting the cost to rehome cats in its care from up to $225 to $100, which is at a loss for the non-profit organisation.

“Carers mostly pay for food and other expenses out of their own pocket,” publicity officer Ginny Smith said.
