Sheila Alexander was changing the batteries from a small window mounted thermometer when the catastrophe happened.
When the tiny 1.5 volt battery exploded it soared two metres into the air, hitting the roof of the house.
Fortunately, Ms Alexander was left without bruise or burn.
Ms Alexander said she was shocked by what happened.
“I got it out of the electric thermometer and it just exploded,” Ms Alexander said.
“I’d taken it down to check the batteries.
“I’m not sure if the manufacturer made the difference (in the battery),” she said.
Most small devices or toys have screws in the back to prevent an exploding battery causing injury, Ms Alexander wanted to make sure people were aware of the potential danger – especially if they were swallowed by a child.
