The popular Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) Junior Masters Series will get underway this weekend with the annual Wagga tournament.
Some 128 of the best golfers from NSW, Victoria and ACT will converge on Wagga for the two-day, 36-hole championship.
Among the field will be promising Wagga golfers Jake Leary, Bart Carroll and William Burkinshaw.
Wagga Country Club’s Matt Carroll said the Wagga kids were looking forward to taking on the best.
“They’re pumped, they can’t wait,” Carroll said.
“All the kids love it. They go to the tournaments and then keep in touch. They enjoy each other’s company.”
Leary, originally of Coolamon, will take part in his first JNJG tournament.
“He hits a very good ball, Jake,” Carroll said.
“He’s been playing comp for a couple of years and for his first major junior comp, it’s good that he gets to play a local one.”
Burkinshaw, 12, will compete in the stableford competition.
“He’s really taken golf on board,’ Carroll said.
“He practices a lot and he’s going to be pretty good at it.”
Carroll will be Wagga's best hope when he contests the under 13 stroke competition.
“He’s been hitting them ok,” Carroll said.
“He should be thereabouts, but he’s still got a year to go so next year might be his go.”
One thing the Wagga contingent have in their favour is playing on their home turf at Wagga Country Club.
“I reckon it’s a fair advantage,” Carroll said.
“Some of the travelling players seem to struggle when they do come to Wagga.
“Some of the top players coming this year won’t have seen Wagga before.”
Carroll said Wagga Country Club’s Brenton Morey and his staff have the course in “immaculate” condition.
As part of the weekend, a shootout will be held for the juniors on Saturday afternoon.
A practice session will be held on Friday afternoon.
