BE THE Influence didn't just shock punters at the Wagga Showground last night, but he even shocked his connections by winning The Appliance Man Maiden (320m).
Pinging the lids to lead from box three, Be The Influence ($40.20) held his rivals at bay to claim a 1½ length victory.
It was a massive turnaround in form, after the dog had finished a third, a fifth and three lasts in his first five runs.
Wild Greg ($1.70) was heavily backed in the race, but after a solid start could only manage third.
The outsider of the field even defeated kennelmate Mind Mapping, who finished fourth.
Trained at Henty by Kerrie and Danny Walker, Danny had little in him faith before the race, but was left grinning afterwards.
"I rated him no chance," Walker said.
"The only adjective I've got is surprised."
With a combined margin of defeat of 76¾ lengths from his five starts, it little wonder the win came at such a surprise.
Although showing some speed in his trials, Walker said he hadn't been able to put it altogether on the race track.
"He has trialled fast sections but hasn't been able to do it for the whole 300 metres but did it (last night)," Walker said.
"He went straight to the lead and it obviously made a difference.
"He doesn't handle pressure on his outside at all and if there is something going with him he probably wouldn't have gone so good."
