Brothers Brodie and Jack Mulqueeny and Joel Friend were at their Baird Avenue home near Kooringal Road when they saw smoke about 3.30pm.
They ran over to the opening of a Kooringal Road property, where Steve Nicholson had pulled up after noticing flames while driving past on his motorbike.
"I saw the first wisps of something and then saw flames that looked like the house could just go up," Mr Nicholson said.
He threw open the gate as the three boys ran up the driveway to the home where smoke was coming from behind.
"We went to check who was in there and she didn't know," Brodie said.
"She came and said what's wrong, what's wrong and we said your property is on fire."
The boys attempted to extinguish the blaze, which they described to be as high as the house, to a rear shed with two garden hoses until fire crews arrived on scene.
NSW Fire and Rescue Turvey Park station manager Justin Bentley said an aerial pumper and tanker were dispatched from the station when a triple-0 call was put in at 3.20pm to a fire at 535 Kooringal Road.
Upon arrival, they required a further pumper from Turvey Park and Wagga stations, while Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews also attended.
Mr Bentley said crews were met with a medium height, quick-moving grass fire that was threatening rural outbuildings, including small sheds and adjacent buildings.
The fire spread to the neighbouring property at 533 Kooringal Road.
"The fire was contained by 3.50pm," Mr Bentley said.
"Crews spent the last hour blacking out, mopping up and extinguishing tree roots."
Mr Bentley said the fire covered an area of 200 square metres and caused only minimal damage to fences, grass and scrub.
Wagga police temporarily closed off the perpendicular-running Vincent Road until the fire was extinguished.
Crews from NSW Fire and Rescue and the RFS will remain on scene tonight to remove a tree that had been burned out to ensure no further fires broke out.
