AN ALLEGED drug trafficker arrested at Narrandera has been refused bail even though his parents offered a $160,000 surety to ensure future court appearances.
Arrested last Friday, Shaun Neil Leffley made a release application in Wagga Local Court on Monday, trying to overturn a registrar's decision to refuse him bail on Saturday.
Police allege 31-year-old Leffley, from western Sydney, had $250,000 worth of drugs - including nearly a kilogram of amphetamine, almost half a kilogram of methamphetamine (ice) and cannabis - in a van he was driving before being stopped by police about 2am at the intersection of Twynan Street and the Newell Highway.
Leffley has been charged with 17 offences, including eight counts of possessing a prohibited drug, six counts of supplying a prohibited drug, two counts of having goods in custody suspected of being illegally obtained ($781.80 in Australian currency and $1150 in US bank notes) and one count of possessing a prescribed restricted substance (diazepam).
No pleas were entered on Monday.
Leffley's solicitor Susan Barnes put to the court that her client could live with his parents in Sydney and they were prepared to deposit $160,000.
She said Leffley could report to police and hand over his passport.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Andrew Pike argued there were unacceptable risks of further offences and claimed the prosecution case was strong.
Magistrate Megan Greenwood refused Leffley bail and adjourned the case until October 22.
