James Couchman, 79, was last seen at 10am on Tuesday leaving his Junee home.
Mr Couchman, who is vision impaired, failed to return home and was reported missing to police at 10am today.
Police held serious concerns for his welfare due to his age and conducted a low-level search with an initial door knock of the town.
Inspector Beth Cullen said it's believed Mr Couchman caught a train from Junee to Wagga on Tuesday at about 1.30pm.
He stayed overnight in Wagga and returned to Junee today, where police sighted him reunited with his family at 12.30pm.
Granddaughter Allana Gilbert thanked police and the community, who helped share Facebook notificications about his disappearance.
"We just want to thank the Junee police because they've been nothing but brilliant," she said.
"And people who helped on Facebook, just to push a share helped.
"My nan is just over the moon.
"We're just overwhelmed."
